Amazing Valkyrie Art

Attached are a  few photos of the wood artwork I did.

It 2 feet by 4 feet and based upon intartia technique.

It is 1/2 the size of my 1997 Valkyrie.

There are 100s of piece and each piece is hand polished.

I thought I share with my VRCC pals.

It cost around $5000, and one of these days I might put it on e-bay.

It is so unique that even I cannot make 100% duplicate.

This art work is based upon intarsia technique. This technique involves wood mosaic. It is made of several pieces of wood having different color or texture. In this artwork, I used only one kind of wood which was pine. That is why it is 'intarsia based.' The overall size of the art work is 2 ft by 4 ft which is approximately half the size of my 1997 Valkyrie.

I used a 8 by 11 size photo of a Valkyrie and enlarged it by hand drawing to the half size. I did think about making a full size but handling of individual pieces would be quite difficult. Once I drew the half size (2 feet by 4 feet) photo, I traces it onto the wood by using carbon paper, then cut along the lines of various components resulting in many pieces of a giant puzzle. As you can see, there are over couple of hundred pieces. Each piece was ground on belt and oscillating senders and then finished by hand rough sanding and was finally finished by using different grade of sand papers, steel wool. The final polishing was done on a buffing machine.

I started gluing small number of parts and made several sub assemblies. I glued the sub assemblies together on the plain background plywood. I used regular carpenter glue in the process. I raised some of the components to give three dimensional effect.

The small photo was a reference point but it was still difficult to understand the details of some components. That is where my 1997 Valkyrie came handy. During the cutting and the finishing prices, I must have put many miles on my feet visiting my bike and studying the details.

While, it is a lengthy and very time consuming process, I did enjoy it because of a unique challenge. I am doing this kind of artwork for quite sometime but never did a bike. I tried to show nuts and bolts and each and every component of the bike including small parts such as foot pegs, idle adjusting screw, cables, disc brake and brake lines etc.

It is quite a unique artwork in the sense that, it is hard to make an exact duplicate even for me. I would not even try that to preserve its uniqueness. I have taken many photos showing the entire process but it would be hard to send all the pictures. I will however attach couple of more pictures.

Well, I have shared the basic information about the artwork. If someone is interested to know more details, I do not have anything of secret nature. I will be more than happy to share my experience.

I wound up using roughly 100 hours in total over a period of six months. The cost of the artwork is estimated to be $5000 if I decide to sell. The frame is also be handmade and definitely unique.
