Education on a HD

I bought her used in March ’02. She came to me with 4500 miles on her, just barely broken in. I’d had lots of experience on dirt bikes, and had been riding a dual sport around town for a year or so while educated myself and shopped for a street bike.

Of course, I looked at the HD’s, the sound is awesome, and I looked at the metrics, but the more I looked and the more I learned the more I realized that nothing really compared to the Valk. I like power, lots and lots of it.

She’s a red and white standard and the best therapy around.

Just last weekend, I left the house around 6:00 am and made a run on her to Beverly Hills. There’s not much traffic in SoCal at 6:00 am on a Saturday morning and the Lady likes that. 90MPH, throttle lock on, just cruising.

On the return, a bit more traffic, but not too bad. Stopped at red light on a deserted part of a 4-lane highway, when a brand spankin’ new HD Road King pulls up behind and on my left. I see him in the mirror, but his front wheel is even with my backrest so I don’t turn around.

The light turns green and I pull away when I sense the HD trying to pass. I can tell ‘cause there’s lots of awesome noise behind me.

He comes even, making a huge mistake, and I let the lady loose. In about 4 seconds I’m doing 125mph, still accelerating, and the HD is so far back I know he won’t try that again.

I coast to the next light, wait for the HD to catch up and exchange thumbs up with a newly educated HD pilot.
