Dyna 3000 for the Valkyrie
The Dyna 3000 ignition system for the Valkyrie is in beta testing! I and some other VRCC members were lucky enough to be invited to beta test the Dyna 3000 ignition system.
On my first ride home after having the unit installed, (installation could not be easier) I notice an improvement in performance, gut feeling though, no hard evidence.
A little background on the Dyna 3000. I am not an engineer type nor even mechanical so take this at face value. Dave at Dyna has promised me at least a one hour interview with him in the near future to really put together a worth while article on the Dyna 3000 ignition system. Anyway on the Dyna 3000 ignition system there are two controls, 1 is to set the degree of advance on your ignition. The other control is to set the rev limiter.
On my first long ride some 500 miles round trip I had a chance to get more scientific in my evaluation of the Dyna 3000 ignition system. On the first tank of gas with the unit set at 5 degrees of advance, with two people up (as I always ride) I got 30.2 miles per gallon. Now this is a noticeable improvement as we were desert riding were cruising speeds rarely drop below 75 and can be much higher. I’ve made some modification on my bike and my normal mileage for such riding would be around 27 to 28 mpg. It seems when I tack over 3100 my tank develops a hole.
Well you can imagine I was pretty psyched about my improved mileage. On the second tank, I did more zero to ?? acceleration runs but was still excited to get 28+ mpg. When I get frisky with the acceleration I usually pay a lot more at the gas pump for my friskiness!
On the third tank which included desert cruising AND mountain twisties. I achieved my best mileage. Now I believe there is a reason for this in that I set the degree of advance to 8. The mileage improvement was great, in that I achieved 33.1 mpg. That is an all time best for me with the type of riding I was doing and remember I was 2 up!
This is all preliminary at best and not really very scientific. But it is an excellent indicator of what the Dyna 3000 ignition system can do. I am very excited (I also cancelled my Interstate Tank, Crash now owns it). One of our VRCC members is really doing a job rigorously evaluating the Dyna 3000 ignition system in a lot more controlled and documented assessment. When that data becomes available we’ll produce an other article.
